SAN FRANCISCO — A state politician with an activist reputation was making what sounded like a stump speech to tech workers on the San Francisco waterfront, promising to tackle the major issues confronting the city.
“The politics of San Francisco are shifting,” state Sen. Scott Wiener told Google employees last month, “so we’re going to solve some of these problems.”
Wiener didn’t mention one detail: He might be doing it from Washington. Whether his next stop is, in fact, Congress sits at the heart of a behind-the-scenes political drama — one so sensitive the players won’t mention it in public, even as the rest of San Francisco and the country chatters about it.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a towering figure who has represented San Francisco for 35 years, is widely expected to step down if Republicans reclaim the House next week. In San Francisco, that’s a generational political event — opening up a seat in Congress that can amount to a lifetime tenure representing one of America’s wealthiest and most liberal cities. The scenario has everyone loyal to the speaker, including Wiener, tip-toeing around an impending political drama. |

They're at a rally for one particular, discrete issue--trans rights. One of their biggest champions in state government on trans rights and LGBTQ issues more generally, a rising star in politics, shows up to support them. And they chase him away because they don't like his position--or perhaps just his silence--on a wholly separate issue. And that wholly separate issue is pretty far removed from whatever's going on in SF.
(Note also, of course, the irony in the trans movement here siding with the group that would literally kill them (https://www.ecpm.org/en/2025/06/02/pride-month-12-states-in-the-world-still-provide-the-death-penalty-for-homosexuality-in-their-penal-codes/) over the group that would let them have a big pride festival.)
So, what's with causes getting co-opted into pan-leftist movements? The same was happening a few years ago with environmental movements, when their goal shifted from protecing the natural world to promoting DEI with some connection to the natural world.

She'd like to support issues for mothers, like promoting maternity leave or spaces for breastfeeding, but those movements and organizations start veering off into a bunch of other causes and issues that alienate a bunch of people who would have supported the core idea.
