He's still sedated with feeding tubes. They are waking him up tomorrow. Sounds like the concern now is to let the broken ribs heal and there is a risk that if he moves suddenly or the wrong way, they won't heal right. They are going to wake him up tomorrow and then he's going to some rehab place to rehab for 4-6 weeks.

This is accurate... my ex wife had emergency open heart surgery and had tons of chest pain and shoulder upper back pain for years after.

After a ton of PT she's better but it took a lot. Because they really crank you open when they split your chest open.

My mom told me this morning that my dad received a blood transfusion. I said to make sure to tell him both the good and bad news. She was confused so I said, "Tell him the good news is that he survived the surgery. The bad news is he got a blood transfusion and now he has AIDS."

She laughed and said, "That's not funny." I said yeah it is, that's why you're laughing.

Update: they moved him up to the rehab floor last night around midnight Eastern Time and he called me on FaceTime, but I could only hear him, not see him.

I asked him where he was and he said home. I said no you aren't, you are in hospital and he insisted he was home. Turn on the camera I told him.

He said, "I don't think I'm going to make it, bud," and my heart skipped a beat.

"What do you mean," I asked him.

"They kidnapped me!" he said and then I heard a nurse telling him to press the green button to turn on the camera.

That's when I said, "See, you ARE in the hospital. No one is kidnapping you, dad," and he goes, "Ah, they got me all drugged up."

"Enjoy it while you can," I told him and told him he could call me anytime. We spoke again today, he was still out of it.

Nah, I'm going to call him every day even though he's never been a talker. He's actually quite lucid right now and just finished dinner. He had spaghetti with marinara. I asked him if they used Aunt Charlotte's marinara recipe (she used to cook for Dean Martin) and he said hell no.

My mom used to post the recipe on her blog, now she has her own marinara recipe so I need to get it from her. She didn't pick up, but I'll poast it when I get it.

I remember she uses Contadina sauce and she said the key was using an entire sweet onion, don't chop it up, just let the entire onion sit in the pot.
