There is this consensus now that building custom in-house engines is not worth it because all that work is already done for you. This is just wrong. Games are always better when they are written from the ground up or built on highly specialized but fine-tuned in-house engines. You can just feel it when you play a Nintendo game, or a Fox Engine game, or some indie dev’s project like that Nerd who made Braid and The Witness.

It’s not “better.” It just saves them like 1,000,000k Engineering Hours and lets them make The Same Games much more quickly.

This is ESPECIALLY true for console games, maybe a little less so for PC. On PC, you have the GPUs that can brute force Unreal 5 to an impressive result. But the landmark console games that really blew everyone's mind, like say Metal Gear Solid 2, were always on their own engines.
