Place. Went around the old city and saw some temples that are basically a bunch of shitty ruins. Also there’s no one but Chinese tourists and old Western retirees around
Women are incredibly busted and standoffish
The only good thing is the fruit

southeast asia actually just totally sucks
if you don't have a 'thing' for jungle asians or trannies, there's no reason to go there. all of the expats there are creeps and losers and scammers. it's a pretty depressing place once you get over the initial 1-2 week honeymoon and actually start to understand how things really work there

how do things really work here? genuinely asking, not being snarky.
i didn't enjoy the animal stuff and the nature is stifling, with the heat and air quality
not into trannies or jungle asians

everything revolves around foreign money (and foreigners) coming in. it warps their societies in really undesirable and anti-social ways
they hate foreigners but pretend to like them because they "have to" and because scamming them (or catering to them) is a more effective way to make money than anything they can do on their own
prostitution is the most glaring example of this, but all of their "tourism" follows this same pattern. and like i said in my above post, the foreigner expats who go there are mostly total losers and dirtbags and scammers themselves. so the locals are right to dislike and resent them. it's all just very bleak and cynical

i lived there for a little while. and yes, natives who choose to associate with foreigners are mostly self-hating and/or have bad intentions, you are absolutely correct
i spent most of my time in asia in China, which is a better place to live, since it's actually a real country. the expats there are still mostly all dirtbags though. you eventually realize that you will, by definition, never "fit in" to their society, and you're always going to be relegated to the margins in weird and undesirable ways
not that there's anything wrong with this - it's natural. my point is that expat life is not a good way to live, and long-term expats are all bitter and resentful about it, whether they try to hide it or not

I haven't been to Chiang Mai in particular or to SE Asia at all in 10+ years, but I had a great time traveling throughout SE Asia.
For Chiang Mai--Have you gotten out of the city to hike in the hills? That looks really cool. E.g., https://maps.app.goo.gl/V9YHr5R8wteS2izbA
And what's wrong with the ruins? Traipsing around in the jungle, exploring awesome ancient built history is great.
Also, it's cool just being there, in a different part of the world, though Chiang Mai might not be the place for that given how overrun with tourists it is.
Getting a motorbike or bicycle and crusing around the countryside is 180000.
