i choose to believe that it's a genuine inquiry into what the drafters meant by the text of the 14th amendment, with letters cited from the period to demonstrate what various politicians thought it meant. i don't think they really thought about the downstream consequences or whether it's good policy

There are several schoalars who convincingly showed that Congress has the power to regulate the citizenship of that category. The arguments are grounded in all the Constitutional provisions and laws giving Congress power over those issues. In other words, grounded in democracy. Roberts relied on the feudal notion that people born on the king's soil owe their allegiance to the king.
