When I was a kid I went to a day camp at a YMCA while my parents worked. I remember they had this setup where once a week we could go across the railroad tracks to this big giant natatorium (probably the largest in the city) snd we would be there for 2 hours or so and just swim as much as we wanted. If you had passed your swimming test they gave you a black neck band and if you hadn’t you got a white band. The white band meant you could only stay in the kids pool/splash area or in the lanes where it was only 4 feet deep or whatever, but you couldn’t go down to the deep areas that were set up for diving.

Anyways, if you were a bit socially awkward and could only make friends with the non-swimmers, they may want you to go to the small pool. But I liked to swim in the deeper water and go jump off of the 3m and 5m diving boards. I quickly learned to only make friends with kids who wore black necklaces.

Also, at this particular YMCA, there was a very strong inverse relationship between the color of your swim necklace and the color of your skin. Looking back, I think it was intentional.
