he was a fairly radical ideologue for the times but he also wasn't a bad president for most of his tenure. there was still a respected "private/public distinction" that allowed public figures to have differing ideology behind closed doors or in private but still put the professional work of "what mainline america wants" front and centre. that kind of system is "high iq" and requires a good deal of good faith to make work but i felt like until the last two years of his last term he did quite well with it and emulated FDR or eisenhower in his professionalism

during those 8 years she scarcely mentioned race and mostly engaged in race-blind civic work. most people of age during those years would mainly remember her as being behind a variety of state sanctioned health and wellness initiatives, which are about as inoffensive as public policy gets

re: race they were both subjected to intense scrutiny until the HLG stuff in the second term and DNC heads used that as a distraction from a fairly normal and "classical liberal" public policy heading that left further left elements in the DNC unsatisfied
