Good question!

So as all literally all trained attorneys learn during the first week of law school, there are two distinct bodies of law in modern America: "civil law," and "criminal law." (There are many subspecialties in both areas -- particularly in civil law -- but that's the big initial dividing line.) Perhaps understandably, lawyers who practice civil law are said to be "civil attorneys" and lawyers who practice criminal law are said to be "criminal attorneys." (Theoretically it's possibly for a single attorney to practice both civil and criminal law, since all attorneys study the basics of both bodies of law in law school, but in practice that sort of split practice is very uncommon for reasons that very obvious to anyone who actually has legal training.)

You have always bragged about working "biglaw" and then going in-house at a private company (these are both HUGE and EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE achivements btw so huge congrats), and I would estimate that approximately ~99.9% of the time that sort of a career trajectory strongly implies a civil, rather than a criminal, practice focus. So I naturally assumed that you are a "civil attorney."

Whew! It's not every day that I get to educate a super successful extremely high-powered and well-compensated middle-aged civil attorney on basic "American Law 101" type shit like "What is a 'civil attorney'?" How fun!
