This man, whose influence was felt throughout the whole period of two hundred years between the appearance of [REDACTED] and the advent of Martin Luther, vanishes from contemporary notice as completely as if he had never put pen to paper. His identity as a man is lost in the one great work by which he has lived. [REDACTED] interests the modern student in virtue both of its contents and its methods. What distinguishes it from its immediate predecessors and also from much of the product of the century and more following is its note of modernity. It is the obvious expression of opinion of an individual, fortified it is true, by abundant if not superabundant reference to authorities, but at every point revealing independence of all authority. Frankly the work of an advocate, expressly intended to support the cause of one of the great parties in a world struggle, it seeks to bring this advocacy of a party into relation with great general principles. [REDACTED] has no hesitation in using the first person. "I will now prove," "I think," "I have demonstrated," are frequent phrases. Everywhere one feels the personality of a thinking man.

PS they are still hiding this book from you. Copies of it are nearly impossible to find online. I had to use foreign search engines to find a PDF of an English translation. Physical copies cost $39 for paperback on Amazon, $109 for hardcover. For a SEVEN HUNDRED YEAR-OLD BOOK. I guarantee YOU never read it.

Here's another way to think about: for 300 years, anyone in Europe who wanted to read a book - any book - was pretty much stuck reading the Bible. If you wanted to read anything else you had to be somewhere like the University of Paris, and even then you needed a damn good excuse to be reading anything except the Bible.
This book was like the Bible inverted. It was the LAST thing you wanted anyone to see on your bookshelf. If you had a copy of this book you had better be illiterate or you were asking to be killed on the spot. So of course EVERYONE wanted to read it. Not only was it not the Bible, it gave the recipe for impeaching popes and kangz and pretty much anyone who claimed religious authority.

OK I'll give another hint: it was written at the behest of a Germanic kang who didn't enjoy taking orders from the Pope. War was brewing and this Germanic kang was trying to justify his disobedience to the Pope, so the kang commissioned a man to write a tract that could be sent to the Pope to hopefully avoid war. The author was like the Dan Bongino of his time, just saying what the kang wanted said.
