I think I know how they did this sort of.

The GR lens was optically PERFECT (yes PERFECT) pre-digital. But digital sensors made them have to do a bunch of shit. Two issues:

1. APS-C sensor is smaller than 35mm/full frame. To get dat sharpness requires moving the lens AWAY from the sensor, which is going to reduce sharpness.

2. Digital sensors have glass covering each individual pixel. The glass is curved, and it reflects light back outward where it can be detected by other pixels. Lenses designed for digital cameras are supposed to correct for this, but who knows how well that's going to work when you're swapping out lenses or you have some zoom shit?

So Ricoh must have calibrated the fuck out of this thing. You can't find chromatic aberration anywhere. U can find more CA on actual film. I don't know how they made it sharp at that distance, I guess they just had to bump the megapixels.

Monochrome processing engine is cr as fuck too. Shoot everything in raw+jpeg and make the jpeg b&w. You can't get better results in post processing

Go for the III. The OIS is worth it. If you are looking at used, check the shutter count and ask for pics of white walls taken at f8 or f11 to see if there's dust on the sensor and how bad it is. I wouldn't worry if it's minor, but some people keep these cameras in their pockets. If buying new get a little case and keep it in that, not your pocket.

Is Ricoh GR just better?

I’ve been frequenting this sub and other photography subs for a while, looking for ideas and information to buy my first camera moving from an iPhone 15 Pro Max and I’m pretty close to settling down on one of the Ricoh GR.

The thing is: I was even willing to buy a more expensive camera and be able to access some features that the Ricoh GRs don’t offer, like interchangeable lens, EVF etc, because I really want to learn more about photography and I felt that that a more complete camera would be better in that sense.

Nonetheless, I keep finding that my favourite images here are those from Ricoh, no matter what. I got really close to choosing Lumix S5ii, for example, because there are so many things about this camera that interest me (like weather sealing, IBIS, L mount etc) but I still find myself prefering the photos I see from Ricoh.

So my question is: are you guys just really good photographers or does this camera actually have something unique aesthetically that pleases me? Would I be able to reproduce that in a S5ii for example or not? Truly beginner here so sorry if I’m asking dumb questions.

Also, if you reached this point, I can’t decide between the iiiX and the IV. I really like a lot of iiiX photos but since I’ve never had a real camera before I can’t tell which focal length would I prefer. Should I just buy the IV because it’s newer and see how I like it?

Sorry for the big post and thanks for reading!
