Utah's open container law prohibits drivers from possessing soda or other caffeinated beverages in a vehicle unless they obtain a permit and keep the drinks in a locked case.
Scandal erupted in 2023 when Orrin Smith, an elder in the LDS church, was arrested with three open cans after leaving a so-called "dirty soda" stand in Provo. Smith, 21, plead guilty to the charges and agreed to attend counseling sessions on the dangers of caffeine.
