Date: February 15th, 2026 7:35 PM Author: Jared Baumeister I got paid on contract to work for this NGO funded by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to do census-type surveys for SE Asian countries, because these countries didn't have the resources to do it by themselves. Moreoever they could do finegrained studies. Like they had done a big study where they interviewed people about their diets to look for communities affected by iodine deficiency. If a community was identified, the government would ship iodized salt there. You could do all of this using local labor in the host country - just hire shitlibs out of the top universities in those countries.
The only thing they needed whitey for was an ArcGIS license. They didn't have one, so they didn't have staff who knew how to use it to make maps. So I got hired on contract to make maps off their survey data. The coolest was this river somewhere in Jakarta that was nasty as hell. They wanted to find out where the shit was coming from and how bad it was affecting people, so they had sent surveyors all up and down this big ass river, interviewing everyone about what they were doing with the river water. Were they shitting in it? Were they washing their clothes out of it? Were they bathing in it? By lining up all this survey data alongside hydrologic maps of the river, I made a custom map that let people choose the survey field they wanted projected and some nice color schemes for easy differentiation (underrated but important factor in making maps!). Took me about one day to make it but I was given ~90 days in Indonesia to complete the project, so I had a lot of time to kill. |

The idea was that if their staff knew how to use it, it would be worth $45k/yr or whatever for a license. The staff were getting paid like $4k/yr, I'm guessing. Who knows.
HOWEVER it turned out the staff already knew how to use the software, because you could buy pirated CDs for $4 at the mall and host your own server. They had all used it in school. So mostly I was just hanging out with these folks and faking like we were working. They were 85% female in that office too, and they talked about sex nonstop. It was nutty |
