Conan was the only funny host.

Agreed.
Some of the others were good hosts and maybe presented some decent jokes. But only Conan was actually funny.

Conan was solid, so was Leno. Letterman had good days and bad. The current hosts are pretty uniformly terrible.

I probably actually watched these guys more than any of you in the late 90s/early 00s because I was a Loser with Nothing to Do iirc.
Conan benefited from Leno warming the crowd up every day which Leno will never get credit for. After Leno came out with his extremely long monologue and bright LA set and lame interviews, a Gen X Loser intellectual from New York seemed like an appealing proposition. Ultimately the funniest things he did involved taking credit for the work of Smiegel and others who were sub-6`00``. He is said to have posted on the internet bc he's Tall.
Leno is the best stand-up to host a late night show. He was funny af when he used to go on Letterman in the 80s. As host he did like an hour of stand-up every single week so obviously most of it was bad but occassionally the jokes landed.
I thought for a time that Letterman was some kind of intellectual because he wore glasses and his name is "Letterman," implying liberal arts. But really he's just a lucky boomer from Indiana or something who bootlicked Carson and still got screwed. I don't think there was a compelling reason to watch him other than being sick of Leno. And there was no reason to watch Leno either other than to be like "I'm up late guys π"

I know everyone is anti-semitic here. But Jews overrepresent good comedians and aren't annoyingly nepotistic. Jews acknowledge and often take a backseat to great Goy comedians. It's not like when Carson, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Chris Farley, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Colbert, etc. came along they weren't pushed to the top of Hollywood. Lorne Michaels always has prominent Jews but doesn't put on more than a couple of Jews a season.

They all actually had their charms at one point - but they also all fall off after 5-6 years. I'd rank them as follows:
Peak Letterman - the most culturally impactful. His early CBS show is probably the forerunner to modern comedy like Tom Green, Conan, Cumtown, etc. He started phoning it in during his later years but he had the biggest impact when he was at the top.
Peak Conan - his show was teh funniest mess in the beginning. Tons of hilarious, absurd moments. Similar to Letterman thoguh he started to tail off towards teh end of his initial NBC run as he played it much safer.
Ferguson - the best interviewer by far. Letterman had good interviews when he was mean, Conan had good ones when things went off the rails - but Ferguson is the only one who could interview a basic celeb and make both of them charming.
Leno - probably the best pure joke teller
Early Kimmel - his show was actually really good and mean when he started. Post Trump it obviously sucks
Fallon - I can't stand him, his jokes and interviews suck - but he knows how to create a big, viral moment
Meyers - okay at telling jokes but smarmy. No good bits and his only good interviews are when he gets his SNL friends on and they tell some crazy story
Corden - he has car pool karaoke and nothing else.
Colbert - he has made 1,600 episodes of television. when he was cancelled, not a single clip was circulated showing why anyone should watch it.
