He was only able to pull this off because he is gay. He told me many years later (he perma-bailed on Egypt and moved somewhere else) that in all the time he was there, he never spoke to a woman. There was simply never any occasion where it was acceptable for him, a single white man, to speak Arabic with an Egyptian female, regardless of her age or marital status.
