and he stuck around in the 80s and 90s too pretty consistently. probably a top .01% hollywood outcome.

One of the more annoying attempts to forcememe a Jewish actor. He was in some good movies, but always took away from them.

He was brutally metooed, ended up estranged from his kids as a second order effect, and is supposedly destitute and isolated somewhere now

absolutely putrid late career though. at least De Niro has had something good here and there. solid argument that nothing he did after Mr. Holland's Opus 31 years ago was any good at all.

During a screening of Jaws at The Cabot theater in Beverly, Massachusetts, on May 27, 2024, Dreyfuss disparaged "diversity initiatives", and launched into what was described as a transphobic, misogynistic, homophobic, and sexist rant, causing many attendees to heckle the actor, and many to leave the venue in disgust. According to eyewitnesses, Dreyfuss mocked the MeToo and LGBTQ movements and expressed contempt for parents of transgender children, suggesting that supporting a child's transition was indicative of bad parenting

In May 2023, Dreyfuss spoke out against the Academy Awards' new diversity guidelines that require films to have met at least two of four benchmarks, including that the lead actors are from underrepresented groups or that at least 30% of the cast and crew come from these groups. During an interview with Margaret Hoover, host of the PBS show The Firing Line, Dreyfuss said that the new guidelines "make me vomit". He explained that he was opposed to the guidelines because movie-making is "an art form ... and no one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is."

There are multiple stories of him not getting along with Taller actors who Bullied him. Robert Shaw was one of them.

Robert Shaw on Jaws — the legend is that Shaw needled Dreyfuss mercilessly during Jaws. Shaw was older, bigger, harder, drunker, more theatrical, and playing Quint, so the off-screen myth almost writes itself: grizzled English tough guy terrorizes young neurotic Dreyfuss while they’re trapped on a boat waiting for a broken mechanical shark. But Dreyfuss later said the feud was exaggerated. He said he and Shaw sparred, but mostly in the form of ribbing, not some endless campaign of bullying. The one ugly story he acknowledges is the bourbon incident: Shaw had a drink, Dreyfuss threw it overboard, and the day went bad. But Dreyfuss objected strongly to The Shark Is Broken portraying him as a fool and portraying the Shaw conflict as uglier than he remembered it.

Bill Murray on What About Bob? — the story is much darker and more direct. On What About Bob?, Dreyfuss and Murray genuinely did not get along. Dreyfuss later described Murray as drunk, screaming at him, telling him everyone hated him and that he was merely tolerated, then throwing an ashtray at him. Frank Oz confirmed there was real conflict on the set. Murray later admitted he enjoyed annoying Dreyfuss during the movie, though he denied the harsher version of throwing something at him directly. Producer Laura Ziskin also described Murray behaving abusively toward her, including breaking her sunglasses and threatening to throw her across a parking lot.

Approximate listed heights:

Richard Dreyfuss: about 5'4".

Robert Shaw: commonly listed around 5'10".

Bill Murray: commonly listed around 6'1" to 6'2".

I'm now the same "age" as the Richard Dreyfuss character in the film. Him "looking back" at the late 1950s in 1986 is the same as my current recollections of the 1990s. I am old -- very sad!
