And for me, I think that time is about now. Spend the next 25 years spending down and converting traditional IRAs, inherited IRAs, 401s(a) and (k), 457s(b), taxable brokerage, and alternatives down until 70, and then living off of pension + SS and leaving the Roth money for the kids as a legacy.

Reducing wage income now lets me avoid way more in tax, so much so that I wind up ahead of where I would be if I continued to work my crappy job. Part of this is based on the market going up and to the right over the next 50 years, but another part is that I just don’t make that much money in the grand scheme of things.

I have never made millions at my first job, or any job for that matter.

Also on 2-years of work history would leave you without a Social Security benefit unless your wife works, at which point you’d be more of her dependent than the other way around.

Great point. In my case I should quit to focus on my physical and emotional health as well. Both are red lining at the moment.

Wages are horrifically tax inefficient. Once you realize this and there’s enough of a corpus to manage, that becomes a lucrative full time “job” equal to or greater than slaving away on a W2. If your W2 is with a great company and is super lucrative, maybe less so. If you own your own firm and that’s an asset that keeps on giving maybe you need to stay in the saddle. I’m just saying in my shoes, my options are so shitty, I wind up richer by quitting my job to tax plan out the next 25 years than I do by working them.

Assuming you make $200k, you're saying you can make whatever that is net by day trading and finding tax loopholes every year for the next 20 years?

No. I’m saying that if I stop working now and start spending and converting money already saved for retirement, I spend that money down to avoid RMDs at 75, and thus avoid paying substantial tax in the future. The value of those future tax savings will exceed whatever I would get to keep of my wages assuming I keep working and lose these last years to finish using up or converting my tax deferred dollars.

When you factor in the tax inefficiencies it makes more sense to lean into tax efficient management, and maybe produce less topline revenue, than it is to go gung ho for those top line numbers.

The dollars all spend the same. All I am doing is looking at my life in terms of when money will become available to me and choosing when and where to wear it. By simply being aware of those things, I don't have to keep earning. I could keep earning, but to what end? Most of that will just go to the Government (not a desired result), acquisition will take its toll (not a desired result), and I don't really need it (limited utility). I can get to the top of the mountain by cutting a switch back or two. So why not?

I've got at least 10 more years. Pension at 55 pays ~$120k a year. Goes up a lot more if I wagecuck until 60 but if info that route I'd probably say fuck it and die at my desk.

Do you have tax-deferred retirement accounts? Are you expecting to inherit any traditional IRAs? You need to look into these things and the consequences of them after 75.

I only have defined pensions. We have a rental that brings in about $25k as well. My wife has a smaller pension and I don't know what that will pay. That's around $200k maybe. And wtf 75?

I have 4 kids so I'll probably be paying for rehab stints and some derelict grandkids or something along those lines eventually.

in your specific case, quitting your firm job is unquestionably the single best decision you could make at the moment but you (ironically) lack the guts to carry through

I look forward to the next 15 years of repetitive woe-is-me handwringing though

This motherfucker doesn't have 15 years left in the tank at this rate. It's amazing that he's still alive and kicking even now. It's like he's clinging to life just to spite his family. I'm kind of in awe of his dedication
