You get $5M, tax free, today.

In exchange, for the rest of your life, you must go to a new country or US state every 7 days minimum. And, once you leave a given country/US state, you can't return to that state for at least 7 days.

Do you accept? What's your strategy?

by new country or state, you mean a country/state you've never been to?

so no rotation across borders would be possible?

Just new in the sense of you aren't there now and haven't been there in last 7 days. So, the following would be OK:

Day 1-6: NY

Day 7-11: CO

Day 12-15: CA

Day 16-18: Back to NY

This would not be OK:

Day 1-6: NY

Day 7-11: CO

Day 12: Back to NY

Eastern Sierra is one of the most CR places in the world. Beyond that, would living there and needing to get on the move every 7 days be worth it? Vegas is nice for a bit.

sure. but im biased because i already do this much of the time and live in an area where it wouldn't be a big hassle. three $1m houses free and clear would be great.

assuming i could explain the situation to a wife and kid that they'd accept. id want them to come with me.

You've gotta think long term here. Is it worth all the moving when you have a kid, when you're old, when there is a snow storm, etc.? It's for life.

when you say you can't return, you mean you can't set foot in the state or just can't spend the night there? either way probably not. you'd blow through more than the $5M just having to buy/maintain 3 houses.

No setting foot at all. It's too easy if you can return all day then just spend the night elsewhere.

Airborne crossing are allowed, but you better hope they don't need to emergency land in a state or country you're excluded from.

$5M is a lot to buy and maintain 3 nice homes in the NY tri-state area. It's plenty for, e.g., one nice home in the NY tri-state area and a pied-a-terre in the city, with you moving around a bit in between. In fact, I already have the nice suburban home, so I really only need one or two more places.

You don't really need to arrange anything if you just drive from your place in MFH to your place in NJ or whatever.

Anyway, how much would the offer have to be for you to accept?

It would be tough for parentmos. Either they come with you and don't have the stability of living in one place, consistently going to one school. Or, they stay put, and your wife is a single parent half the time.

These places are not that far from each other and are all part of the same greater NYC region. Plenty of people live in one state and work or go to school in the neighboring state. Your kids could go to the same private school in NY the whole time, you just drive a little farther to drop them off when you're coming in from NJ or CT.

You can't return to the state you left for 7 days. They can keep going to school in NY and commuting out to NJ in the evening, but you can't drop them off or go to their events in NY.

For that reason, NY-NJ-CT is a tough place to set up your base insofar as you can't easily get between NJ and CT without crossing NY.

How long do I have to do this? One year? Five years? Until I retire? The rest of my life? What happens if I do it for (say) 20 years but then I wind up in the hospital and have to stay there for a week? If it's a temporary commitment, sure. But it could get dicey if I have to do it for the rest of my life, because the minute I get seriously ill (or old enough that I can't easily move around) I'm done here.
