I heard on the radio today Shania Twain’s Still the One. This is an ironic song because she went around flaunting how great her relationship was with her husband for a long time, then her husband cheated on her with her best friend and then left her, which turned into a giant public shaming. Does she still sing this song? If so, I wonder what she thinks of it when she does sing it. It’s one of her most famous ones.
It also reminds me of Billy Joel’s She’s Always a Woman. Joel wrote that song in defense of his first wife, who all his friends and family members warned him she was conniving and self-centered. Well, they turned out to be right and his marriage pretty quickly blew up, after she stole some important rights to his music. He has said publicly that he hates singing this song and when he sings it he’s usually thinking about what he’s going to be eating later.
The underlying symbolism of a song can change dramatically even when the words, tone, and song itself remain the same. Just like with life.

Wasn't he a lying back stabber type? Shafted his band and never told them to their face.

he let some of them go around the time of storm front because his producer thought they were duds.
never been a rockstar, so not sure what the expectation is for how long the guy with the name and the talent is expected to carry easily replaceable backup randos.
the beatles, stones, floyd, etc all famously ejected much more significant people who were full founding members of the band when they were found to be dead weight.
