Is anyone else nostalgic for dorm life?

I worked at a sandwich shop and I made like $275 every 2 weeks. I got a check for $525 once a month from my parents. Between these two income sources, I paid my rent, I had enough to eat, I had enough for laundry and whatever else I needed, I got to work out in a nice gym, and I would go on super long walks--sometimes up to 7 miles-- through the various neighborhoods adjacent to my University. I had plenty of money and was saving some every month. I even had enough to fly across the country to another University, where I knew a girl. It was living the life of a retired person or something similar.

Man…I remember a semi-surprise visit and I had to hide all her shit and make it seem like it belonged to the person I was subletting from. And she had to go chill at a friend’s place in the evening so it wasn’t quite as obvious that she was living there. I still wonder if my parents knew…it’s probably like when my middle school aged kid now lies to me and thinks she’s getting away with it. |

My very first roommate was super weird and dorky and probably a closeted homo. I remember he would basically record everything I was doing in a journal. Then, he went and told the RA that I was suicidal. Their response to this was to move me to a tiny ass 20 room dormitory where only international students were housed. It was awful and it set in motion my plans to leave that university. At my next school, my roommate was pretty chill. Still a nerd, but he was in an engineering program and pretty chadly as far as engineers go. Never had any issues with him. Although sometimes he would play games late at night while I was trying to sleep, but that’s not a super big deal. I’m sure I annoyed him too at times. He was dating some chick who went to JMU and then he dumped her. lol. |

But I did do bigfed, which included 9 weeks of in-person training. Hundreds of people (mostly 20somethings) all in the same hotel. It was completely 180. Basically all the benefits of dorm life with none of the downsides. No RAs, no bosses, just instructors that aren't going to dime on you as long as you don't massively fuck up.
You have your own room. Tons of drinking. You can't cook food in your hotel room and you're getting paid a per diem so you have to go out to restaurants every single night with your bros. I know that sort of shit gets old real fast in the context of regular business travel. But this was completely different. You're not working hard at all and you have tons of choices in who you hang out with. |

Bars, restaurants, each other's hotel rooms, the hotel lobby, there was a lounge on one floor that only us bigfeds had access to that had free sodas (i.e. mixers). I went to 3 concerts and got hammered each time.
Monday though Thursday I kept it relatively chill. Fridays and Saturdays - self explanatory. Sundays we started the earliest because the NFL was on, so we'd go to a sports bar and drink and watch football all day. Kept it chill enough that I wasn't overly hungover for Monday morning. |
