yeah i think a couple variants of the stg44 did. same with the mp40
folding stocks became a necessity when european nations started deploying mechanized infantry in droves, sort of like how the advent of paratroopers brought about the popularization of what we call the contemporary carbine
it lets you have something larger than a handgun inside of a tank or APC carriage. they weren't really an espionage thing
