oh wow trains are DET free in USA!

US train deaths average around 900-1000 annually, with most fatalities occurring from trespassing and at highway-rail crossings, rather than passenger accidents, which are rare. In 2024, there were 954 railroad deaths, with over half from trespassing (663) and a significant portion at crossings (27%), while passenger deaths remained very low, despite high overall numbers, showing trains are generally safe for passengers but dangerous for those on or near the tracks.

Track trespassing, falling off trains and pre-existing illnesses – the top three causes of deaths – accounted for 24,989 fatalities, shows the data obtained by activist Godfrey Pimenta from Watchdog Foundation, a nonprofit. Other reasons included being hit by a railway pole, falling into the gap between the train and the platform, electric shock, suicide and natural death.
