During the robbery, Victim 1 saw both Garcia brothers frequently making phone calls to an unknown third party, who appeared to be providing the information related to the cryptocurrency accounts and transfers.

Through this third party, the Garcia brothers became aware that Victim 1 had additional cryptocurrency funds. They demanded the money. Victim 1 explained that the remaining funds were on a hard drive-style cryptocurrency wallet that was stored at a family cabin approximately three hours away.

This third party is fascinating

If this plot hatched IRL, the third party is probably fucked too.

If this is some sort of darknet scheme where the muscle didn't know the identity of their boss... that would be fascinating.

Imagine stealing $8M and getting away with it

presumably the third party is well acquainted with the victims to know about the physical location of a hard drive. it also seems likely that it is someone with real swing such that he would give these hoodlums the info and not expect to get cut out himself.

otoh, the garcia brothers are obviously retarded and that doesn’t speak well for whoever hired them. who knows?

Not exactly. The hard part is correlating a big wallet to an actual person. If you're willing to kidnap someone and put a gun on them, it doesn't really matter if that wallet is cold or not, or where it's located.

"Victims" here are pretty obvious drug dealers / distributers. Hopefully they get locked up as well (or, even better, sent back)

IDK, it's not 2015 anymore. Most crypto fortunes are derived from speculation.

Victims were an older couple living out in the burbs with an adult son living with them & a cabin up north. Not really a drug dealer profile.

Also the initial news reports were that it was a few tens of thousands in crypto. Today the news is that it was $8M. That leads me to believe that the offline cache at the cabin was the bulk of this $8M. Doesn't really sound like an active drug dealer if the bulk of what you've got is in a cold wallet.
