The Brusco family in NY, for example. We know them well. We knew mostly low level guys like bookies. I don't think we knew any killers but I'm not sure. I didn't perceive them as "bad" guys, in fact quite the opposite. Nice, vivacious people.
One mafia family we knew had a VERY large house in a nearby town owned by a higher level guy. Every Christmas, on his grounds he had live animals (like goats, cows, horses, llamas, all kinds of things) and live manger scenes. Everyone from around was invited to come and pet the animals and ride ponies and what not. The other people in this very wealthy neighborhood didn't like it and would complain and when the police would come to ask if he had a permit he would say "these are my pets". Lol. They are characters. |

The unglamorous answer is that it fucked him up bigly because his dad brought him into the lifestyle. He was driving S600s and Range Rovers as a 17 year old, vacationing in London and Aspen, sitting courtside at basketball games. We were astounded as kids growing up about his lifestyle. But what his parents failed to do was encourage him to develop useful skills or to get a meaningful education. When his dad was indicted and the music stopped it fucked up his life for him for years in a way that he's still struggling to recover from. He's trying to live a normal life now, has a wife and a kid in the burbs, I suspect he makes maybe 60-80k per year in an office manager setting. He hates his dad. Then he gave us a short lecture, the main thrust of which was that we should avoid going to jail because we would catch AIDS from inmates breathing on us.
I now think his reasoning was sound and that he got the relevant facts right. However at the time I felt his argument lacked persuasive force because it relied on a premise I could not assume to be truthful. Now I think he probably probably just said that stuff about breathing because he didn't know how to tell 12 year-olds that it actually involves buttfucking.
Anyway after that we all believed his dad was FBI. However, everyone also came away with the impression that his dad was a corrupt meathead faggot, because the kid always had the most expensive shit for anything a kid his age would have. Clothes, watches, gym equipment, all that shit, this kid always had the most expensive shit fresh off the shelf. He tried to be fratty as fuck and had a rolex when he was 16. However he was just as retarded as the most retarded fuckup mafia kid I knew. Moreover everyone hated him. He was never popular. He got bullied in the only social circle where he was active (which was mine, for reasons beyond my control). Mafia kids could get away with being flashy and retarded but this kid couldn't. We just shut him the fuck out, screamed at him if he made his presence known to us, and on one occasion when he tried to show off the knife his dad bought him yesterday, my friend yanked it out of his hand, jammed it in a log and flung it into a lake. The event happened at sunset so I never got a good look at the knife, but witnesses said it was the most expensive swiss army knife you could buy at the time. |

It was an entirely plausible explanation of the circumstances that led to us knowing him.
It was also entirely plausible given the fact that the only work this guy ever wanted to do was at a store where he noticed they had really nice jewelry. For the first year he lived in the US, the only people he actually knew personally were me and a few of my friends. We invited him to parties a few times because he seemed like a cool guy and he was a chick magnet, but it turned into a disaster really fast and we had to break off contact with him because he did some wildly inappropriate things. The last straw for me was when he asked a girl I know to marry him. The very first time he got her alone, he started crying and told her people were trying to kill him, and he begged her to marry him to save his life. The last time I spoke to him was when he called to ask if I would take him to get his driver's license, just a few days after he asked if he could borrow my passport for two weeks. A few years later I heard he was married to a German woman in her 50s (he would have been late twenties/early thirties at this point), and they were running a business selling $35 US citizenship information packets to immigrants. The packets contained pamphlets and forms anyone could get for free from the government. Don't know if he ever got near those diamonds. |

He got this short term work visa that anyone on the street can (or at least could) get over in Russia. You work for a sponsor and you're not supposed to do anything but work for that sponsor. At least that's my understanding.
This guy was recruited from Russia to work at a summer camp for mentally and physically disabled adults, located out in the woods in the middle of nowhere. If you have a 35 year old retarded AND physically disabled humanoid that you have to take care of daily, and you need a break for a few months, this is where you can make it someone else's problem: a summer camp with no photos of the facilities on its website. The Russian dood was put in charge of three such "campers." He had to do things like hose off the 300 pounder whenever he would shit himself (the "dorms" were well equipped for this sort of thing, I'm told), and restrain the guy who always wanted to take off all his clothes and go running off into the woods. That same guy also was also 100% nocturnal, so he would try to run away all night when everyone else was sleeping.
The reason I know him is because another friend of mine was defrauded into becoming a "summer camp counselor" by this organization during his freshman year at a prestigious college. They kept quiet about a lot of details when they hired him, and I had no idea what he was up to until he called me out of the blue less tha two weeks after he started and asked me borrow a minivan from a friend of ours and drive it to where he was located, 4 hours away, right away. I didn't ask questions because this bro never does anything without a good reason.
4 hours later I pull up on this fucked up 2 lane highway at midnight and I see my buddy. He opens the door, throws his shit in the van and runs off into the bushes. He comes back a few seconds later with a girl and a guy I don't recognize. They jump in the van. The girl is russian and very hot and speaks no english. The guy is Russian and speaks good english. He says he's on the run from the mafia after driving a truck with some guns to "east germany" and he plays acoustic guitar and sings on the ride back. The girl has a suitcase and the guy has only a backpack and his guitar. My buddy says I"m fucking this girl she's amazing I'm gonna marry her let's get out of here. We tried to get mafia dood settled and get him a job, but we made the mistake of looking for work he could do instead of work that involved being near diamonds. 20 years later my buddy is married to the russian chick and they have two kids. She speaks flawless English and picked up another language along the way and she's a kindergarten teacher at an expensive private school, |

He was one of those guys who liked people to think that his dad was in the mafia, lots of cryptic "I don't know" answers when you asked him stuff about it. I think he just liked the image, and truth be told he was on a first name basis with a lot of big dogs around town, because he was the son of the restaurant owner that all of these people loved. I do know a few times when friends got speeding tickets in high school, he would say "let me handle it" and somehow the tickets were magically dropped, and this happened a bunch of times for a bunch of our friends, and none of them knew what he actually did to accomplish this.
Now this guy owns his own restaurant/steak house. I really only reconnected with him lately, he's kind of a strange guy, but I do know that he too has all sorts of crazy connections around town, including possible mafia types. |

I was too scared to do it and decided to just go to traffic court and see what happens. But when I went to court they said the ticket had been dropped and I still have no idea why. His last name is well known locally as a mob name and you can google and read about grandpa and all the shit he did - drugs, running alcohol from Canada and the Appalachians during prohibition, loan sharking, gambling, racketeering, some murders and other enforcing, etc. - stereotypical mob stuff. The grandson in my class never talked about it but people would give him shit - he just wouldn’t acknowledge it. He was a slick dresser, clean cut, very polite, and a pretty good student - not at all a goombah.
There were a few kids with really Italian names who slicked back their hair, drove old Cadillacs, and talked with an accent (all of this was really out of place; they were sort of like the few wigger kids everyone felt bad for) who were just pretenders but wanted everyone to think they were connected. |

I met her new husband, real tall sexy guy who gave off a power vibe big time. Was a "businessman." My wife's birthday was two days later (we never told them) and when my wife and I walked down to the beach to chill that day, there was a really elaborate tent set up. They'd thrown together a birthday party for her with a live rock band, elaborate cake, etc. Guests from the resort were out there, too, and a few of them were absolute ballers who were tight with our new friends.
Through conversations and our subsequent 10yr friendship, I figured out the business is narcotics. He's always inviting us out to do extreme sports at his compound and shit. Gonna take him up on it one of these days. Absolutely 180 dude, flew his wife to Florida to give birth to each of their kids, that are all now anchor babies. |

He broke it down for me how they scored drugs in Colombia and dealt with international inspections. The entertainment crew had their own spots they went to to avoid tourists when they docked. He said there was always some old rich walrus on the cruise who knew how to work the crew and get invited to party with them, so they would find that guy and use his money to score.
The crew was divided between dancers and musicians, and dancers were better at scoring drugs. A rich guy trying to get invited out would know that. They would also hide their keys in the musicians quarters, like inside the piano, so if they ever got nailed during an inspection the cops would think the musicians did it. |
