Raskin was enduring chemotherapy for a serious form of cancer and confided that he hoped to be around long enough to become a grandparent himself one day.

In the months following that tearful conversation two years ago, Raskin Boebert — now 62 and 38, respectively — quietly developed a friendship built on the belief that people aren’t wholly defined by their politics, even in this polarized era.
