There was a period of time after the Cultural Revolution when Mao was still alive and in charge, and during that time the government was super fucked up and really stupid. There's a reason they lost a war to Vietnam around that time. I mean they were so fucking stupid they started a war, then they were so stupid they lost.
HOWEVER it was during that same time they the current "old guard" was installed. Among these neophytes there many who had the right ideas, it really just took the death of Mao + the passage of time for the Chinese government to become somewhat intelligent. They had to observe all these failures in order to learn what not to do |

Date: May 29th, 2026 3:02 AM Author: floppy cyan halford Just going off of "what's available" the Chinese are not quite as overrated as the Russians were (or are, at least until Putin calls up a more general draft, which as I understand it, he politically can't) but they also aren't in any position to challenge the US militarily over the RoC and the south china sea. Arguably, they're not even in a position to challenge Vietnam for regional hegemony over Southeast Asia. Vietnamese and Korean exports have been undercutting China's rising margins to produce and I'd have to guess this is why Belt & Road was undertaken with such urgency and financial largesse (the loan packages are basically gratis in several African countries), to ensure captive markets before free market competition from other regional exporters cuts out China. China in the latter Mao years was repelled not once but twice from the Vietnamese theater, and this was *after* the ARVN forces were culled or poorly integrated and the Americans had already slaughtered a good chunk of the nation's fighting men. Chinese might in any field but the economic is overrated. Outside of the African market they've steadily been losing ground in several "dumping" fields of exports to their various regional rivals. I've read quite a bit of both American and European penned works on China in the 70s---I have a Sino-American diplomatic cheat-sheet covering the 60s to the late 70s as my current bathroom reader. Regardless of internal politics and policy wrangling the PLA has very little actual battle-testing and by all accounts seems to be mired in doctrine that is either well-outdated and countered by current US doctrine or purely theoretical and entirely untested beyond (often biased, and still VERY political) exercises. |

The cultural revolution made the Chinese government stupid while Vietnam stayed smart. Look how the Chinese project in Cambodia turned out in the 70s. Look who put an end to it.
