There is really no difference between elaborate reconstructions of "Roman" life and the "Dinosaur mania" of the late 19th C.
We found some weirdo stuff in the dirt, and academic types went wild speculating about how the pieces fit. Some speculations become canonical, for various political and profit-based motives, and further speculations spin off these, as if they were solid.
