Even at his peak you got the impression that the Bechdel Test functioned as an arbitrary constraint on his work, like if you told Monet "no red in this one".
Now the Academy has built that one relatively simple test out into a set of DEI criteria that--if you haven't yet looked at them, you should; this is not braindead conservative hysteria here--have basically had a proportionate effect on nolan's work. |

I mean don't get me wrong, it'll make money off nolan's personal brand, but that's true of anything at this point; the question is what it does to that brand going forward. I'm sure the thing will be fine but none of this other films (incl. Tenet) ever got this kind of bad buzz. Also libs are on the ropes culturally and have been (to their immense credit IMO) basically cutting bait on coming to the defense of this kind of shit now, so no one's really out there fighting for him. Best comp is probably disney's new Snow White movie with the Mud Princess as to whom "fairest in the land" literally now means "she is fair (i.e., just) in her decisionmaking". |
