Not once did I “need” alcohol. The pull was mainly that I was bored/lonely and wanted to go out to interact with people (I go to the same places where the staff and patrons know me and talk to me). So I went out and drank some NA beers (this confused my bartenders but they were cool about it). Previously, starting at lent, I gave up hard liquor (mostly) and was drinking beer which, frankly, did not do a whole lot for me as far as feeling anything close to a buzz. More like it was something to do that was not work to relax. Comparing my experience to others I know who would try to stop, I consider myself pretty lucky. During these two weeks I had some pretty great things and a not so great thing happen and I did not drink, or really feel any need to. I credit diet, exercise, vitamins, and our Lord and Savior for the calm. I don’t think I will drink until I hit my weight and fitness goals, but rather do a sober summer. It reinforces my view that I am not an alcoholic insofar as I am dependent on it, but rather I am a drunk who likes to drink.
PS NA beer tastes better and is fewer calories than actual beer. I had never tried it before.

It isn’t a psychological thing. It’s a physical thing. Your brain literally creates new receptors to deal with nicotine intake and when the nicotine is removed those receptors start screaming. But there is a range in intensity as to how many receptors a brain will create.
Again, you are assuming your biology is universal for everyone.
Also it makes a big difference how much you are taking. I was powering through like 30 zyn pouches a day.

I have given up alcohol for indefinite indeterminate amount of time. Going on 8 days but plan on much longer.

you should consider staying sober. alcohol is terrible for you.
my unraveling is well documented here, so i kinda had to stop but i was shocked at how easy it was for me. i did some bullshit program where i did meetings on zoom for a couple months (wife told me i had to or else i couldn't have my kids over at my apt). after about a month i didn't have cravings or anything.

You’ve never struck me as an alcoholic because it does not seem to significantly interfere with your life. When that changes you’ve made the jump.

Three week update. Last Sunday I really wanted to drink as Sunday night is my preferred drinking night and things were shit all around in my life. I did not drink.
What I have learned, drinking NA beer is a fine excuse to sit at a bar and no one seems to care (or notice) but it’s still wasted calories. I have found the athletic golden to be my preferred beer (45 calories, gluten free). I need to try the athletic lite (25 calories) but I have not seen it at a bar.
I did not lose a pound (still 195) but somehow lost a notch on my belt. Maybe it’s muscle gain and water retention from creatine? Maybe I need to take a shit (probably). Ordered a cheap bench so I can do some more exercises with my dumbbells. Been walking around now that it’s not 99 degrees out.
I have done so much work around the house. Basically I would say fuck it and go out as opposed to doing chores and repairs.
Anyway, sobriety, no porn, crazy diet (sub 1000 calories of veggies and lean protein) is BORING. I will probably go on a bender soon. PS quitting nicotine is impossible.
