Many good things have come from California, not least the greatest film industry in the world and artificial intelligence. And California has managed to keep the pioneer spirit alive while it's all but dead in other states. California has all this public land where you can just go hiking or surfing whenever you want. In a state like Texas, almost all the land is privately owned, and what little public land that exists probably wouldn't be open to recreation without California being a shining example of the great outdoors. California has its problems, but it's always experimenting, always on the vanguard, and for better or for worse the problems that plague California always end up bedeviling the rest of the country in about ten years. In compensation we also get all the cool new innovations that Californians come up with first, on that same ten year timeline.
