You will not have the $3 million condo in Santa Monica, your kids will not attend the fanciest private schools with all-white children. You will have to make trade offs, you will have to live in the suburbs and commute if you want to continue the lifestyle you are currently living with children. No doubt, you will still be able to take the kids to Disney and skiing, afford the fashionable labels, and never have to worry about keeping their stomachs full. You will still be able to afford that late model European luxury sedan that everyone else on your block drives, and maybe even membership in the local Country Club. But if you are harboring dreams of vacationing in Monte Carlo for 3 weeks, or taking the family on that luxury African safari and then returning to your manse in the hills, disabuse yourself of those notions right now.

what i have a problem with is your claim that people who are making $300-400k/year are expected to make the sort of sacrifices that involve commuting 2-3 hours/day. that is not normal and you cannot seriously say w/ a straight face that such a commute doesn't put a huge damper on your home life. that is something that i know people with families making $150-200k and want to buy a home and commute from SGV, inland orange county, or further out parts of SFV do b/c that's the sort of sacrifices they have to make. but once you get to a certain income level, it isn't being spoiled or entitled to want to live a reasonable commuting distance to work, since the commute has such a huge impact on your QOL. |

bottom line, you have to make a lot more than $300k/year to feel comfortable with a 30 year mortgage/property tax payment of $6-7k/month, which is the point where you're prob feeling a bit richer. nobody in my friend circle is making those sort of payments per month in early-mid 30s, more like $3-4k/mo at most. and even in those instances, many had parental help. frankly, i don't think anybody will really feel rich until they're in their 40s, but i'm sure then people will be complaining about $400k for each kids' college tuitions or whatever. |

It seems to me there is plenty of affordable housing, but that people would rather kill themselves than deal with a commute/traffic or live in a "dangerous" neighborhood. (People in NYC seem less reluctant to move to Bushwick, Bed Stuy, etc. than LA folks would be to move to South Central/Compton.)

the whole point of the thread is discussing whether $300k is rich. my options are live in a nice house in a black/hispanic neighborhood in reasonable commuting distance, live in a shitty 1970s apartment around affluent gays w/i reasonable commuting distance, or live in a modest-sized house 1 hr+ away from work. if those are your choices, you are not rich.
not once did i say i am entitled to or expect to have a nice house in a good public school district w/i reasonable commuting distance, despite the fact that these are things that even middle class people can have in most parts of the country. complaining that making $300k doesn't get you there doesn't mean you feel entitled to get it. it's just acknowledging the reality that $300k does not make you rich in a high col area. |

wages or active business dealings only mattered as much as they served to increase one's passive income. to answer your question, i think you'll begin to feel rich when you are debt free, own a house and land, AND your passive income rises above 100k. in order to reliably receive that income today, perhaps you'll need to amass a net worth (including primary residence) of about 3 million dollars.
