I decided this was the best way to get AV1 decoding on something connected to a TV. This will allow me to game without having to sit at a computer. I can just stream it over LAN using Steam. There's no way I'm sitting at my desk and playing games, nor am I about to haul a big as PC out to my living room, nor do I want a console. I'm going to let my PC with the graphics card and the CPU do the gaming and stream it over lan to this mini-ITX PC.

First of all, these things require a low profile cooler. I thought I was going to cram a regular ass tower cooler in there but forget it. Maybe you could do a AIO with a 120mm fan, but I don't want water anywhere near this thing.

Also fuck putting an external graphics card in there. In theory I could do it but it seems really stupid to even try.

I ordered this case, which was the cheapest I could find that had a USB-C port on front. The handle is also nice, and it's removable.

I could have gotten a bigger case, but the whole point of this is to be small and easy to move out of the way or put in another room. It sucks to put everything together though. I mean it really, really sucks

That's my plan. I put SteamOS on a AMD laptop and it runs great, but it's limited to HEVC. The AV1 toggle is sitting there in the SteamOS control panel, GREYED OUT.

just buy an nvidia shield pro.

but if you want to be stubborn and build, and not going to use a discreet gpu, just use a nuc.

NUCs are noisy as fuck. All of them. The ones with native AV1 are overpriced too. The Shield is old and doesn't do AV1 decoding.

I want to try games on my TV over my local network. AV1 gets you the best speed, but you need a RTX 4000 or 5000 series to do the encoding, and the client also needs to do native decoding. You don't need Nvidia to do the decoding, Intel iGPUs are just as good, so that's my plan. AMD supports AV1 now, but people say the image quality is dogshit.

the shield is going to do it just as well as anything you build via steamlink. ive been doing this a long time. my first build was a windows xp media center edition with hauppauge tv cards and discreet radeon gpu using shuttle cases. i stopped when the shield pro came out and have not had a reason to build again. i keep looking for something better than the shield pro (it is old, yes) but there is nothing that can beat it, esp when you factor in time, effort and money.

however, i will say that my primary goal was streaming tv box and gaming secondary. today my kid streams expedition 33 and COD no issue.

I hear you but SteamOS is stupid easy to setup, and it's already quite usable on my Thinkpad with shit Radeon graphics. It's easier for me to dual boot into SteamOS when I want to game, then leave the PC as a Proxmox node or something when I'm not gaming. I'm only pissed that I have to find a low profile cooler won't crush the VRMs or the RAM on this tiny motherboard.

stubborn ok. in that case i would not use any case smaller than 10 liters. formD is as small as you should go to ensure near dead silence and giving you the option to put a full gpu or aio in there if you want to.

have you considered an avr to switch between something like a shield pro and a computer for the two use cases? both could be online at the same time.

tbf I never planned to do this. I just snagged a SFF power supply for cheap a long time ago and I already had a spare CPU and RAM. I would never invest serious money in this kind of thing and the Shield Pro looks good for the price.
