The murder itself wasn't that sensational, while it was bad keep in mind there had been plenty of big murders in the area. The Medendez brothers went to Calabasas, and this was not that long after the Ninja Murders ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Gerald_and_Vera_Woodman ) which didn't get as much national press as the others but still were a huge deal in the community. EDIT: it was also only a few years after Nicole Parker's murder https://www.dailynews.com/2007/02/18/rocked-by-tragedy/
The Parker deal was a tough one and I'm still upset about it, but yea that area was accustomed to horrible murders.
What was crazy was that Jesse ran and it took a long time to catch him, they finally got him in Brazil (I believe). But law enforcement was looking for him, and they knew about most of my friends and were doing surveillance. It was crazy, any time any of these got arrested for DUI or something, while they were in jail they would get pulled out and an investigator would start asking about Jesse. A lot of my friends were obviously on some sort of watch list and there were a few years that you knew that if you talked to some of these guys on the phone that you had to be aware of what you said (as it was possible agents had tapped the phone). That was the part that was crazy.
EDIT: while the murder was shocking, these were kids that didn't grow up in the big-name gated communities and their parents were not wealthy, so there was a general attitude that these were trash kids doing trash kid stuff.
