Date: June 12th, 2025 8:23 PM Author: Cordovan sweet tailpipe do you remember the “WGC” events? they were always a stupid idea or would have been if not for tiger woods. the match play was one of them and held on the longest actually. turns out sponsors didn’t want to pay those huge purses when the star power wasn’t there. and match play makes that even worse when you can get really lame finalists.
of course now the tour has basically recreated the same idea as the WGCs with the “signature events” or whatever they’re called |

too much of a headache for the tour to keep them happy. i think they also wanted all the signature events or whatever they’re called to have the same format and field size |

I thought he was talking about pga championship going from match to stroke play back in the 60s or whenever they switched it.
Edit: it was actually 1958. First pga stroke play was at Llanerch which I’ve actually played before. Did not know that. |

then they changed the format to some round robin thing and it was in fact very gay. went from the only non major i’d watch early rounds of to one i didn’t watch at all |
