I genuinely mean that. This coming weekend, I'll have my 2 older kids the whole morning saturday and sunday as they both have games. We get up early, get a bagel, get to the field early so the 3 of us can kick the ball around and have fun before the rest of the team gets there. I hang out with the one who's not playing, then we drive to the next game and the roles reverse. Maybe stop for lunch on the ride home.
I feel fortunate that I get to do this and cherish every minute of it.
I do agree with you that the travel requirements for the highest leagues (e.g. ECNL, GA and MLSNext) are outrageous, but that won't come for another couple years and will depend entirely on how serious my kids are about soccer. There's no reason, for example, to drive 4 hours each way for a single U14 soccer game. This model is for hyper competitive parents, not the kids. I'm sure they'd be perfectly content playing other children who live closer to them. |

And in the high school years I watched them spend a small fortune on pitching coaching with like advanced video and data driven analytics, spend all of the family’s time traveling to tournaments and events, and absolutely crater the development and self-esteem of the neglected daughter who was several years younger. I think they’re just now realizing the price that was extracted as the son is almost done with school (with parents still traveling constantly to go see his games) and the daughter’s engagement with family, community, and school is coming back into focus now that the parents have some time.
