But if you read letters, etc. from Civil War soldiers most of them were absolutely obsessed with the notion of their personal honor. They may have been fooling themselves, but at least they aspired to something and tried to swim against the current of human nature. But once you become a pig happily playing in the mud - basically like Trump - and everyone accepts that as normal, societal decline is inevitable. Because it was men like those Civil War soldiers who ensured that, back then, the world was getting better, not worse.
