when gays were persecuted most were closeted. now that it's an advantage tons of heteros claim to be gay or bi.
i don't think most in those groups were ashamed of their heritage. they just didn't put it on display when it would cause more harm than good. i doubt bloodacre's kids will be ashamed of their jewish heritage, but if jews are disfavored of course they will be more likely to hide their heritage. this is what happens when any group is disfavored by society. |

i told you above and invited you to explain what your point with that poast was. i described your point as "jews deserve those consequences." which you just repeated in this subthread btw. i accused you of trying to walk it back when you accused of me mischaracterizing what you were saying. and so i invited you to explain what your point was. and you just repeated "what did i walk back?" well, i just told you again: you seem to attempting to walk back "jews deserve those consequences" by denying that was your point without explaining what your actual point was. but maybe i'm wrong, which is why i asked you to just tell me what you meant, because i'm not mischaracterizing it on purpose. |

here, i'll substitute the phrase you used, it's the same thing in the context of our discussion:
a: "jews that can pass as goys often do because for many there are negative consequences for having jewish heritage"
b: "imagine pollacks feeling this way"
c: "well, pollacks don't get blamed"
b: "there's a reason for that"
whether jews deserve a negative reputation, and however severe that negative reputation is, doesn't matter. my point from the outset is that people will hide their heritage when it's disfavored by society. |

Date: May 28th, 2025 3:42 PM Author: Arousing stubborn dingle berry site we're talking about why an individual might hide his heritage. dupa talked about playground razzing, etc. just because jews aren't being hauled off to camps doesn't change the fact someone may not emphasize that they're jewish if there are *some* negative consequences, which could include just being "othered" somewhat socially. this is especially the case when a jew is secular and doesn't feel any significant personal attachment or pride about their jewishness, i.e. they don't really care about defending it.
if suddenly there was anti-irish protestant sentiment because The Troubles reignited i wouldn't feel they need to defend my heritage. i have no association with ireland or any dog in that fight. and i'd avoid negative association with it because it has nothing to do with me. not because i'm ashamed of my heritage, but because i don't want to be associated with something i'm not apart of or be made to defend against it. |

also it's a matter of degree and how much they "are" that thing. a secular jew with no ties to judiasm might actually feel they arent that thing (e.g. rsf, taking him at his word). and hiding could be anything from not broadcasting it to actively denying it.
in my irish example, im proud enough that I would never affirmatively deny my heritage. but im not flying the Irish flag either. |
