Watched The Abyss (1989) for the first time. Is this a well regarded film?

I watched the directors cut I guess and it was nearly 3 hours long and had some gay heavy-handed "war bad" ending that the theatrical release doesn't
But it is a beautiful looking movie. It would have been a 180 twist if the aliens were evil and the navy seal dude was right to nuke them |
