it actually came from 1880's vaudeville and was a popular slang term in the 1890's before falling into partial disuse. but then it was revived several times - during the roaring twenties, again during a period in the 50's as a kind of nostalgic irony among beatnik types, then again during the 1980's.

but i don't think it's getting another shot at life. it's just too 'old america'-coded at this point.
