Nate Sores has the credited take on this issue. He says you can argue about whether a submarine “swims” and make all sorts of interesting philosophical arguments as to why only things that flap an appendage are “swimming” in the true sense of the word, but at the end of the day it’s still moving through the water from point A to point B at high velocity, which is the part that matters.
In any event, my personal view is not only will they be conscious, but they will achieve a much higher level of consciousness than organic life is capable of. And even if it’s a qualitatively different thing than consciousness in the human sense, it will be something more interesting and complex and higher-level than human consciousness. The debate is really just semantics.

I think the argument is wrong. Not because I think AI has "consciousness" in the full human sense. Current AI systems plausibly have some parts in weak or simulated form. But because the argument itself as big structural vulnerabilities.
It's central anti-computational move is too blunt to distinguish brains from AI. They are basically arguing that computation is not an intrinsic physical kind because it depends on coarse-graining, alphabetization etc. But this applies not just to silicon systems, but biology as well. Brains also are described through non-fundamental coarse-grained categories, like spikes , assemblies and representational states. So unless they can come up with a principled asymmetry showing why biological organization licenses constitutive consciousness while artificial organization does not--their argument either collapses into general skepticism about computational descriptions of cognition or into substrate essentialism. Basically, it doesn't show that AI fails because it is computational; it only shows that any theory of consciousness must say much more precisely which physical organizations, coarse-grainings, and dynamical invariants actually matter.

Strongest counter argument imo is that the author is assuming that the presence of mapmaker capability is what makes humans "conscious." And AI doesn't have mapmaking capability, so it can't be conscious. But we don't actually know that's why humans have consciousness. It's a presupposition by him
If that's not the reason why humans have consciousness, then it doesn't preclude AI from experiencing the same thing, or at least something very similar

I wrote a paper in my freshman year philosophy class making a point similar to his about consciousness requiring a mind-world relationship established by physically experiencing the world ("causal history" is required to generate "abstractions," in his words). That was one of the two main arguments in my paper. But I've actually changed my mind about that one over the past few years after considering the possibility of a conscious mind being fed fake data as if it were interacting with the world. In that scenario, I still believe the mind would be conscious. So now I believe that in theory, an LLM could become meaningfully acquainted with a concept like "Red" without experiencing it in the way we do. Importantly, I don't think it would count if it just got to know the meaning of "Red" in the training process as a statistical cluster; I think it would need to become acquainted with the concept in real-time after training. It needs *a* causal history, but that history doesn't need to look like our experiences, and the resultant understanding of the concept doesn't need to be a neurophysiological state. That's where I think the author's biggest leap in logic is.
I do like his mapmaking function framework and I don't think it's wrong on its face. I just think he needs to open his mind a little more about the forms that mapmaking could take.

I did throw around "meaningfully acquainted" a bit too casually and don't quite have a satisfactory answer to what that would look like, but your "robust and causally grounded" is as good an answer as I can give you right now.
When you say "whether concept possession alone is enough for phenomenal consciousness" do you mean to ask if it's enough on its own, or are you asking if THIS type of concept possession – one gained through some kind of data stream different from human physical perception – is good enough to satisfy the role that concepts play in a framework like the author's, which we agree is a pretty sane one overall? I'm just positing the latter.
Backing up a little bit: when I think about AI achieving consciousness, I've never remotely considered the possibility that an LLM or an agent built on an LLM may be a thinking being 'out of the box.' I think of consciousness as something that an agent could eventually reach through experiences and memory formation (and I'm happy to adopt "mapmaking"). I'm not sure what those experiences would look like – I don't think cHaTtInG is gonna cut it – nor do I think that any of the current agents' context memories are big enough to house a genuinely thinking, learning mind. But I've always been drawn to the idea that the human mind is just one example of a mind. (The intro philosophy class I mentioned was with Jaegwon Kim, so it's probably unsurprising that I'm sympathetic to functionalism based on that alone, but I really believe I would've ended up there no matter who I learned from.) Similarly, human biological perception is just one example of a way to gain a robust understanding of concepts that are instantiated in the world.

This might not directly answer each of your points, kind of drunk, but my thinking on this is that the role should not rquire specifically human-style continuous embodied perceptions. A very different kind of stream including artificial ones could suffice even if the phenomena you end up with are pretty alien to what we recognize as consciousness. Even continuity itself might not be essential, it could be just one implementation. And grounding may not require physical interaction as long as you have structured interaction with some sort of "environment" (even artificial). Where my intuition is strongest I think is that it probably is not "continuous human sensory input is required" but something more like a system needing a rich, persistent, structured causal history that stabilizes distinctions and reorganizes its internal state over time in a way that matters to the system, and this could in principle (aside from biological embodiment) be realized in simulated environments and other architectures we haven't built yet. Where llms fall short (for now) is persistent identity across time, stakes, and self-maintained coupling to some kind of environment.

Evolution by chance trial and error eventually discovered how only certain nervous system configurations could tap into the universe's laws of consciousness (compare conscious brain to gut brain) and that's the way we'll have to as well.
