hard not to go with ouimet. his 1913 us open win was a yuge deal. they even made a movie about it with shia lebeouf playing him
theres a bunch of other prewar doods who won a lot of shit too but hard to really rank
post ww2 best am career might be frank stranahan who won three times on tour as an am. no one else has done it twice. also finished 2nd in three pro majors competing against guys like hogan snead and nelson. he did eventually turn pro though
could also just say tiger. three us ams in a row is insane, especially considering the way he had to comeback in some of those matches

? back in the day winning the "grand slam" in golf(like jones in '30) was the two opens+two ams. two doods i mentioned won multiple ams when they counted and beat top pros too. and idk how you could say ouimet didnt make it based on his open win alone
tiger woods' am wins dont count as majors imo but he obviously made it and theyre a huge part of his lore
