here, i'll substitute the phrase you used, it's the same thing in the context of our discussion:
a: "jews that can pass as goys often do because for many there are negative consequences for having jewish heritage"
b: "imagine pollacks feeling this way"
c: "well, pollacks don't get blamed"
b: "there's a reason for that"
whether jews deserve a negative reputation, and however severe that negative reputation is, doesn't matter. my point from the outset is that people will hide their heritage when it's disfavored by society. |

Date: May 28th, 2025 3:42 PM Author: glittery up-to-no-good wrinkle dingle berry we're talking about why an individual might hide his heritage. dupa talked about playground razzing, etc. just because jews aren't being hauled off to camps doesn't change the fact someone may not emphasize that they're jewish if there are *some* negative consequences, which could include just being "othered" somewhat socially. this is especially the case when a jew is secular and doesn't feel any significant personal attachment or pride about their jewishness, i.e. they don't really care about defending it.
if suddenly there was anti-irish protestant sentiment because The Troubles reignited i wouldn't feel they need to defend my heritage. i have no association with ireland or any dog in that fight. and i'd avoid negative association with it because it has nothing to do with me. not because i'm ashamed of my heritage, but because i don't want to be associated with something i'm not apart of or be made to defend against it. |

also it's a matter of degree and how much they "are" that thing. a secular jew with no ties to judiasm might actually feel they arent that thing (e.g. rsf, taking him at his word). and hiding could be anything from not broadcasting it to actively denying it.
in my irish example, im proud enough that I would never affirmatively deny my heritage. but im not flying the Irish flag either. |
