Is Steam to blame for the state of gaming? PC gaming used to be intellectual and the games blew away the shit on Consoles. Halo is retarded and Scummy compared to half life 2 and CS. RTSs are intellectual af. You’d have to be retarded to play western made PS2 games when PC existed. No one said this back then. And now, you can get 5000k games for $2.99 and never play them. Something has been lost.
Imo the plebs have moved onto PC and they’re treating it like they would a console. The console warriors all migrated to PC and they treat it exactly like they did 32X/PS1/360, badmouthing other platforms constantly. I have never caught so much shit for playing Consoles as I have in the last few years. PC gamers used to be above it all. Now they’re just proles like OYT and doodikoff with no sense of Curation. Literally the opposite of Curation, buying everything in sight and totally overlooking the best games. The fact the PC cases look retarded and have weird lights on them is all the proof you need that I’m right. Accept it.

I don’t know where it started but PlayStation/Xbox/PC all using x86 architecture makes ports easy af. Like it’s really hard to justify not porting when the hardware is The Same. Whereas for Squaresoft in 1990, porting FF to Sega CD would’ve been a big Engineering undertaking that rivaled producing a new game entirely. Konami released different castlevanias on TG16/SNES/Genesis in part for this reason. Then you had N64 which used cartridges and had No Games.
In the PS2/Xbox/shitcube gen there were tons of ports and the hardware was different but by that point at least Nerds didn’t need to code in assembly.
But now, and it’s not just “omg AAA Budgets, The state of gaming,” but the simple cost:benefit of like 1000 Engineering hours to port something when a million sales generates like $7,000,000k at $9.99/ea minus the distributor’s cut, so ports have like a 99.999% profit margin basically. How do you explain to Shareholders that a game being on Xbox “devalues the brand” lol.

I was kind of interested in this based on the pedigree, but i couldn't get past the character designs. always find it tough to get into story-based games where most of the cast looks younger than teenagers.
if you want a game that you can sink TONS of hours into based on a seemingly intriguing premise only for it to amount to very little in the end, you could try Hundred Line Last Defense Academy.

It's the somewhat older games that are the problem. Resident Evil 4 Remake has been marked down to $19.99 for *checks notes* 11 consecutive sales now.

Mega Man Zero collection has been marked to the same "sale" price like 19 times in the past two years (and probably more times for a lot longer than that):

If you shelled out $5K or whatever for a 5090 system then why care about $5-$10 price difference for games?
Agree though that the Steam sales aren’t as good as they used to be.

What is the best stuff you’ve played the past few months?
You’ve come out on other threads hard against some of my favorites this year (E33 and KCD2) but I’m not a backlog guy and always am looking to try new stuff now that I’m wrapping up Silksong.
A lot of the new stuff (Wotai, Outer Worlds 2) looks like slop to me.

I didn't say E33 was bad other than the story. I thought the combat was a lot of fun until it devolved into doing the Same Move over and over.
In the last few months I had a lot of time in Gloomhaven/Frosthaven. These are games that if you just want to steamroll them on the default or lower difficulty aren't necessarily anything special, but at higher difficulty levels might be the best "tactics" type games out there. Frosthaven is the newer/harder/currently incomplete game, and the amount of strategy required to be good at it is absolutely insane. There is a big learning curve and the games are slow-paced, not flashy, and will piss off most players.
Before that I think I was playing some Slop on gamepass, and different rougelike and deckbuilding games. And also Library of Ruina.
This is probably the best game coming out soon:

Based on the demo, it will be listed with the GOAT shooters.

First half of the game seemed great but it all fell apart. They had a good story premise that they didn't do much with and the planet presented no mysteries that were actually solved. Any plot threads that seem intriguing at the start end up getting resolved in the least interesting ways possible.
The game is too easy (even on the harder difficulty) to where the ample time you are given to do everything is in conflict with the desperate situation portrayed by the plot. You have a raging faggot clone and it's hand-waved away as basically everyone having some gay in them depending on the circumstances. The third area was a big disappointment after the verticality of the second area, and the areas needed to be probably 2x-3x the size to preserve some illusion of "open world" exploration.
There was a concept of a good game that I don't think they fully executed on, but I did enjoy it some.
