It served the key purposes of 1) establishing the national tolerance for admiring ugly, autistic dorks who were good at coding as captains of industry and 2) it created space for the fag/dyke rights movement to advocate for recognition of their rights to be more equalized with hetero rights. It was already an outdated framework by 2005, let alone 2015 post Obergefell and with social media fully dominant over traditional media, let alone today.
