Trump visits mosque in Abu Dhabi, an apparent first for the president

ABU DHABI — President Donald Trump toured one of the world’s largest mosques Thursday, removing his shoes to take heed of Islamic customs as he arrived here for the third and final stop on his foreign trip this week.
It appeared to be Trump’s first trip to a mosque as president, a remarkable gesture for a man whose political career has been marked by intolerance and derision of Muslims. It showcased his willingness, particularly on this trip, to accede to unfamiliar cultural norms to forge potentially lucrative partnerships.
“Isn’t this beautiful? It is so beautiful,” he said. “Very proud of my friends. This is an incredible culture.”
He marveled at the fact that the religious site had been cordoned off for his visit.
“This is the first time they’ve closed the mosque for the day. Is that true?” Trump said. “First time they closed it. It’s in honor of the United States, I think. Better than in honor of me. Let’s give it to the country. That’s a great tribute.”
Trump has been seeking connections during a trip filled with elaborate displays of pomp that he has appeared to relish, despite a long history of skepticism toward alliances and a willingness to portray Muslims as terrorists and criminals. As with previous visits to the Persian Gulf, Trump has been gracious toward his hosts as he and they have flattered each other with compliments and what appeared to be genuine affection.
He repeatedly praised Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, calling him “an incredible man” and saying, “There’s nobody like him.”
“Oh, what I do for the crown prince,” he said.
After meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Trump called him “great,” adding that the former Islamist militant is a “young, attractive guy. Tough guy. Strong past. Very strong past. Fighter.”
He favorably compared Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to the Saudi crown prince, deeming them both “tall, handsome guys that happen to be very smart.”
The trip to the mosque showed how flexible Trump can be when faced with the possibility of striking deals, and highlighted the tension between that appetite for deals and some of his other policies. Trump has been solicitous of Arab leaders in the gulf but has also largely stood aside as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has provoked the region’s wrath by escalating the war in Gaza.
Trump arrived at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as his first stop after landing in Abu Dhabi. He joined other dignitaries to walk along a colonnade made of delicate arches and white pillars adorned with golden accents and intricate flower inlays.
Wearing only socks, since shoes are not allowed in the place of worship, the president was given a tour and explanations of various features in the building. “Is everybody having a good time?” he asked reporters and photographers there to capture the moment.
The mosque first opened for worship in 2007 and is designed to promote values of tolerance and cultural inclusiveness. Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner visited in 2020. It is among the biggest mosques in the world, with a central hall that can accommodate nearly 8,000 worshipers.
