I cannot say that I knew her well as we got older, but her mother was my 5th grade teacher, and was the first adult who spotted me and took an interest in me academically.
Both her mother and father were educators: mom taught 5th grade and father was principal at the HS. They both had degrees in math, and were always very encouraging and we were so lucky to have them in our little podunk school system. Truly they were the only legitimately "smart" and academically inclined adults that I was exposed to until leaving for university.
The girl, which was their only child was very brilliant and stood out, although tragically, I feel like she was groomed and molested by an older man who was her neighbor, and was the only man that I knew her to date during high school. The girl moved to a larger school nearby, when the Dad took over as superintendent and was valedictorian up there, and this is why I did not know her well from our high school years.
This neighbor was a weirdo and creep. He married the girl prior to her even graduating high school, and I cannot for the life of me understand why her parents allowed this. I feel they were to blame in some way. I used to ride my bike the 10 miles or so from our house in the country up to my grandmother's store in the little town. One day when I was 13 or 14, I was riding and when I got near the man's home, I saw him standing by the farm to market highway shirtless staring at his reflection in a mud puddle on the opposite side of the highway from his property while flexing and playing with himself. He didn't see me or hear me as I was on the bike until I was very close to him, but seemed neither startled nor embarrassed. Also once in the 10th grade, I attended a school event at night and he was there with the girl. He just looked at me and said "do you ever think about suicide"
I am very sad for her as I feel this was a huge downfall in her life marrying him so young. She ended up being a HS math teacher, but could have done so much more. They divorce of course and she remarried and finally had a child. She seemed happy later in life, but to die so young with a young child is just so depressing...

Thoughts and prayers.
How much older was the guy? Why didn't her intelligent and thoughtful parents take care of that problem for their only daughter?
