There was a time when Sears was the largest retailer in the United States with 3,500 stores.
Now it has just eight.
And for folks of a certain age, that is an incredibly somber fact. But it is a fact nonetheless, and the cut down to eight came at the end of 2024.
There are three remaining Sears in California — Burbank, Concord and Whittier — and two more in Florida in Orlando and Miami. There is another in Braintree, Massachusetts, another in El Paso, Texas and another in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
That’s it.
Kmart actually purchased Sears in an $11 billion merger back in 2005, but the stores were not able to keep up with the retail competition that came from the likes of Walmart and Amazon. Sears filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and then bought out of that in 2019. The struggles have continued since, though, and after a store closure late last year the retailer is just hanging on by a thread.
Meanwhile, Kmart closed its last full-sized store in the continental United States last October.
There is one store left in Miami, but it is not a full-sized location and has a “limited range of products,” according to a USA Today report. USA Today reported that Kmart once had more than 2,000 locations around the country as it duked it out with Walmart in the retail giant game.
