Warlords in that conflict weren't TRYING to get civilians killed. They wanted to claim them as subjects. Control of human labor was the goal. If they knew it was going to last 30 years they would have rebooted and negotiated something.

It's like Obama thinking he just needs to overthrow Gaddafi, and Libya will become a US client state. In reality, we ended up with a bunch of warlords clamoring for control of Libya. Obama is long gone and we've long since abandoned whatever foreign policy agenda we had in 2014, but it might be another 20 years until Libya comes under stable rule again. That's a 30 years war.

If you weren't claiming authority to rule from the Pope, you had to claim direct authority from God. There was no other way to claim authority back then. So we got "divine right of kings" out of that.

The problem with that is anyone can claim their rule came from God. "I won this battle, therefore God is on my side." It's circular logic.

The English were thoroughly conquered by Vikings, or so we thought until another Viking clan arrived from Nor[se]mandy. I don't believe the Vikings who were running things in England circa 1000AD were feeding people or running things well, otherwise they would have put up a better fight against their cousins.

I should add that you're definitely right to bring up the 30 years war, because it was more historically significant than WWII. "Europe" as we understand it is just a byproduct of that war. Any war in "Europe" is going to split along similar lines too.

you think a war following closely on the protestant reformation and divided largely on religious lines had no intentional civilian casualties because it was about human labor? let's say we're exercising HEROIC CHARITY and assuming you have the best of arguments to support this. to pick just one more example, how do you explain civilian casualties during the boer war?

The tradition is described by Tacitus, so it goes back to the era when people lived in small clans. You can't just scale that up and claim you're doing the same thing at the empire level.

you're assuming a hobbesian or similar model of human motivation a priori. i'm not doubting that this has explanatory power to some extent, and probably more for some actors than for others. this is an insane and untenable broad brush for all of the ideological descendants of the jesuits and northern calvinists, though.

The decision to bomb civilians with horrific napalm was a strategic decision intended to have a political effects on the adversary. In the past, armies made a beeline for other armies. If armies were attacking civilians, it was random violence, not strategic.

Civilians almost totally unharmed. He targeted confederate supply lines, but he didn't just do that. His men hunted and foraged and lived off the land, which was something the locals themselves were unable to do. His men were from Michigan, not Georgia, but they didn't need trains to deliver supplies to them in Georgia. It was psychological warfare.

NSAM has a bizarre fixation with napalm and thinks it's more dangerous than nukes because more people have died from it through the use of millions of incendiary bombs versus two nuclear bombs.

Just to be clear what ur saying here is actually the exact opposite of military history. No one cared about "civilians" officially until WWII. Most of the history of warfare was absolute murder and enslavement of all enemy population by conquering horde

We didn't have mounted horse armies until there were well established grain/population centers to raid. One had to come before the other.

Conversely, nomadic tribes were sources of human labor and talent. As the population centers grew, there was more demand for their labor, so they got hunted down and enslaved over time. Now we call them "Ukrainians" but they're just leftover slaves who escaped along the way to Baghdad.

sure a conqueror doesn't want to rule over an empty city, but i don't think he meant that *all* of the enemy was killed/enslaved, he meant that in wars of conquest (not raids) the conqueror would often treat the civilians pretty brutally.

Bro. Loads of them died. Ur making me run to chatgpt here

Yes, your statement is broadly correct—the indiscriminate killing of civilians, including entire villages, has occurred repeatedly throughout European warfare, especially during the Middle Ages. While modern laws of war (like the Geneva Conventions) seek to protect civilians, such protections were largely absent or inconsistently applied in earlier centuries.

Here are some notable historical examples from medieval European warfare:

1. The Harrying of the North (1069–1070) – England

After William the Conqueror faced rebellion in northern England, he ordered a brutal campaign to suppress it. Villages were burned, crops destroyed, and entire populations massacred or starved.

Chronicler Orderic Vitalis wrote that over 100,000 people may have died, though modern estimates are lower.

This was a deliberate act of terror and punishment targeting civilians.

2. Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) – Southern France

Launched by the Catholic Church against the Cathar heretics, this crusade featured notorious atrocities:

Massacre at Béziers (1209): An estimated 15,000–20,000 civilians, both Cathars and Catholics, were slaughtered.

The infamous quote attributed to a papal legate: "Kill them all; God will know His own."

3. Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) – France and England

Civilians regularly suffered during chevauchées—raids designed to terrorize the countryside:

English forces under Edward the Black Prince conducted destructive raids across

Chevauchées in the Hundred Years' War (e.g., Black Prince in 1355):

English forces systematically burned villages across southern France.

Chroniclers mention hundreds of settlements destroyed in just weeks.

German Peasants’ War (1524–1525):

After rebellion, thousands of villages were devastated by princely armies.

Tens of thousands of peasants were slaughtered, and villages were left in ruin.

Feudal Feuds (10th–13th centuries):

Localized wars between barons routinely involved ravaging each other’s lands, including killing and enslaving peasants.

These were part of the unwritten "rules" of power projection.

you're quibbling with his use of "most" and mine of "often."

would you agree that conquering forces sometimes massacred/enslaved a sizeable portion of conquered peoples for thousands of years before ww2 such that NSAM asserting that ww2 was the first time civilians were targeting is insane and stupid?

i don't think "often" is wrong, meaning that it happened frequently enough that if you read about any period of history you'll read it happening. really weighing in this would require defining what's "war", whose a "solder", etc.

but you can't read about any empire without coming across stuff like avaricum pretty frequently. of course amateurs focus on the most important and notable events. i'm sure you're right that more often brutality against the conquered was limited to incidental deaths from pillaging.

It's also not done with the intent to kill the population. The expectation is that the population will relent before everyone dies from starvation. If you intended to kill the population through starvation every time, you would have to plan for every siege to be long as fuck, like multiple harvest seasons.

What is certain is that civilians as a protected class of non combatant didn't exist formally until after 1949

The first real example we know of of a noble being punished for killing "civilians" was the trial of Peter von Hagenbach in the late 1400s. There was a code yes but it wasn't really played out like that. Just like it isn't really plated out like that today. Lots of civilian dicks get sniped off in battlefields all over the world.

It was common to kill all the men and take the women as sex slaves, but not universal practice because a lot of the men knew how to farm or make tools. Men with the right skillset who didn't seem like troublemakers might have their wives stolen, but there was no strategic reason to kill them wholesale. Killing children would have been weird too since they can be used as future sex slaves or soldiers.

WWII is the bad one because there's an evil antagonist at the center of it and it's a clear case of liberal democracies fighting a different political system. WWI was a bunch of decaying empires and expansionist states ruled by inbred monarchs getting sucked into the same type of retards scuffling European conflict that had been going on for centuries, just more widespread and industrial scale death.

There's no more painful way to die than burning to death. Napalm has that effect where it will just burn through your leg down to the bone a few minutes before more of it splashes onto other parts of you. We were doing that deliberately, in order to terrify people into overthrowing the government. We tried it in Vietnam too.
