How come China has never produced a Kurosawa?

my brother in christ, Chen Kaige (farewell my concubine) made that movie in 1994, and since then has won double digit domestic film awards

I liked Beijing Bicycle which is kind of a callback to De Sica's Bicycle Thieves.

kurosawa was wildly popular and pedestrian, think spielberg. he was not critically acclaimed and while he brought japanese cinema international, it is the cinephile and cineaste set that really worships him. japanese at the time thought his films were immature, too western and flashy. it is funny to me that white liberals worship kurosawa now.
chinese cinema was closed off for many decades and unknown to the west. there are many great directors, more recently the fifth generation, zhang yimou and chen kaige being personal favorites. the fact that barely anyone knows these names tells me that you guys think chinese cinema is jackie chan in rush hour.
