the us hasnt committed to the war yet struck first. if iran had initated this offensively there would have be more support to stop them.
also they couldn't know how vigorously the us would oppose/attack them. we have the power to stop them if we had the will to use it. that's part of why this is such a disaster: we've proven we're a paper tiger, so we can now expect iran to be more aggressive going forward.

perhaps, Iran has always underpriced/undervalued its true upper limit value in setting the price of oil to their benefit-- they won't make that mistake ever gain
oil, gas, helium-- whoever rules the Persian Gulf rules world markets

every other country would economically and politically freeze them out and they'd be brutally victimized in whatever resolution eventually happened. their own people would hate them and maybe actually "rise up" against them to some degree
to be clear, iran's leadership is not even actually "choosing" to escalate in the way that they're doing now. they have no real choice. jews will continue to force the US to attack them until they are destroyed. iran's only choice is to continue to proportionately escalate in order to deter further US military aggression. they cannot just "make peace" because israel and the US will just come back later and do the same thing after they regroup. they are FORCED to take this conflict to its conclusion (either the US backs off, or iran is destroyed)

Why would they want to? The leaders are all perfectly comfortable and can evade the sanctions and continue making bank by selling oil to China and other countries that don't give a shit about "sanctions."
Hypo: If you were making, say, $50M/year under the status quo, would you risk being killed by a US/Israeli strike in hopes of making $100M/year instead?

because rational countries don't take maximalist high risk action when they don't need to.
why did Regan sign a free trade agreement with Canada instead of invading. could they have stopped us? would anyone have tried to intervene?
