COD has a well-Engineered gameplay loop, or it did in the 2000s. running, aiming down sights, Upgrading, bombing 12 year old Scumbags, etc. But I question the life decisions of Scumbags with 20 years of buying the Same Game every year with body counts in the hundreds of thousands or millions
Halo always felt kind of boring imo. never owned it but played couch multiplayer. It was probably no better than Timesplitters or something. Seemed worse than Unreal Tournament. Btw Unreal Championship for Xbox features a Norwood 3 guy bc that's aspirational for Xbox players: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/91/Unrealchampionshipcover.jpg
imo when something slowly gets less popular it's proof that it was always mainly just hype. Examples: Halo, Metroid Prime, grunge. On the other hand, stuff like Counter-Strike, Zelda, and non-Gen X music has more staying power.

F-Zero is a good game. I played 99 a few times. I think F-zero 99 and Tetris 99 both do SBMM. So as soon as you start getting good it slots you in with better people. I've scored 2nd in both. But when I realized what was happening I stopped caring.
I never saw the point in the 3D F-Zeroes but ymmv.
Idk COD3 had the same stuff going on, aiming down the sights and stuff. which I don't remember seeing in any game before MGS2. So maybe Kojima deserves credit if anyone. But COD4 was the first one to be popular with Console Scum.

A lot of redditors insist that "Perfect Dark for multiplayer, Goldeneye for single player." idk, a lot of people think PD runs out of steam towards the end but I enjoyed the Alien shit.
Fact remains that people wouldn't play it irl, they'd do Goldeneye or some other shit. you also had System Link to complete with in the higher income brackets. Dreamcast was also out, PS2 on its way.
buddy of mine (Brayden), his dad saw him playing in 2000 and was like "what is this game, you play as a bitch and the president is a nigger..."
